Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Yet another silent killer

Hypertension Treatment

Are you taking daily tablets for your BP problem?
Are you suffering from side effects from your daily medication?
Do you know the real cause of high BP?
Is your condition putting unnecessary strain on other organs?
Do you believe herbal medicines, a simple diet and natural treatment can improve your high BP condition?

If the answer is yes, to any of the above, it’s time to address the root cause of the problem called ‘Hypertension’.

What is hypertension?
In simple terms, hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. It is the medical term for high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force of blood against your artery walls as it circulates throughout the body. The condition when the force exceeds the normal limit is called hypertension. It is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). Hypertension is defined as a repeated high blood pressure condition, exceeding 140 over 90 mmHg — a systolic pressure above 140 with a diastolic pressure above 90.

The more blood the heart requires to pump when the arteries get narrower, the higher will be your blood pressure. Though the pressure does not remain constant throughout the day, it is the overall increase beyond the standard parameters and normal limits, which affects the smooth functioning of the heart over a period of time. High BP if left untreated, can lead to cardiovascular disease and stroke.

High blood pressure or hypertension is also known as the “silent killer” since it often has no warning signs or symptoms, and many people do not even recognize that they may be suffering from it.

In India, today hypertension is the most important risk factor for chronic diseases and the leading cause of death. As per the May 2018 report of the Indian Council of Medical Research, 10.8% of all deaths in India can be attributed to hypertension. Hypertension accounts for 29% of strokes and 24% of heart attacks in India
Statistics revealed, more Indians were suffering from hypertension than diabetes in 2017. As per data from National Health Profile 2017 from all the patients who visited government clinics, approximately 10 per cent were diagnosed with hypertension and about 8 per cent were diagnosed with diabetes. This data confirms that hypertension is becoming a bigger concern and cause for worry than diabetes in India. The scarier part is that people are normally not aware and completely ignorant about the fact that they could be suffering from hypertension.

Types of hypertension

There are basically two types of hypertension-
1. Primary hypertension – This is the condition where high blood pressure is not related to any other medical condition.
2. Secondary hypertension – In this condition the high blood pressure, usually is caused due to some other condition or ailments like pregnancy, obesity, kidney disease, sleep apnea, alcohol addiction, thyroid disorder or sometimes even due to some adverse effect or side effect caused by a particular drug. Only about 5-10% may suffer from this type of high BP or hypertension.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause –
1. A Heart attack or stroke
High blood pressure (BP) can cause hardening and thickening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), which eventually causes a heart attack or a stroke.
2. Aneurysm
Increased blood pressure weakens the blood vessels making them bulge, forming an aneurysm. If an aneurysm ruptures, it can lead to death.
3. Heart failure
Thickened heart muscles find it difficult to pump blood to meet the body’s requirements. This could lead to heart failure.
4. Organ malfunction
Weakened and narrowed blood vessels in your kidneys could prevent other organs from functioning normally.

What causes high blood pressure?
– The primary cause of high blood pressure is atherosclerosis. The multiple factors responsible for atherosclerosis resulting in hypertension are:-
– A diet rich in fat and salt
– Regular cigarette smoking and use of tobacco
– Increased consumption of alcohol
– Lower physical activity and exercise
– High level of mental stress
– Obesity and overweight condition

Hypertension treatment
High blood pressure is categorized as systolic blood pressure over 130 and diastolic over 80. Treatment is immediate with a regular intake of drugs to avoid diabetes and high cholesterol. But these drugs are not enough to warrant a long-term relief from high blood pressure. One needs to simultaneously make lifestyle changes with better eating habits and exercise.

Allopath medication for hypertension includes –
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs)
Diuretics.
Beta-blockers.

Less dependence on chemicals due to the side effects of drugs over long periods is now recognized.
